NoFollow Plugin For WordPress Posts
Often when writing WordPress posts, we have a desire to link to external websites. Sometimes we like to cite an article on another website or blog. Many times, these links are “links of pure love” and they will benefit from gaining an additional link and pagerank. Sometimes you reference another site that is a exhibiting a bad behavior and these could be categorized as “links of pure hate”. You certainly don’t want that site to benefit from you giving them a link. (Dan Thies coined these terms at SEO Research Labs). Sometimes we just reference a definition and they don’t need the link juice. Like this: Wikipedia Nofollow Definition.
The best way to not pass “link juice” to a site you are linking to is to add rel=”nofollow” to the link in the HTML code. In WordPress this means that while you are writing the post, you need to use the “Insert Link” feature, then go into the HTML editor mode, find the link in the code, then add the rel=”nofollow”, then switch back to Visual mode and continue writing your posts.
The problem for us was that many times we forget to manually add the code to the link! Not to mention that it is just a real pain-in-the-butt to do it anyways. Besides, we are inherently lazy. LOL.
So, we decided to build a plug-in. When activated, it simply adds a checkbox to the “Insert Link” dialog box. If you want to “nofollow” the link, just check the box. We thought it was so useful, we wanted to share it with the WordPress community. So here it is. Enjoy!
